In 1993, a series of bomb blasts ripped across Bombay, India’s financial capital, killing hundreds and injuring thousands of people. Arun* was one of the victims — he suffered a severe leg injury. He not only got a limp, but also developed an infection that would emit an unpleasant odour, rendering Arun unemployable and socially isolated. For 25 years he continued to life this half a life deeply traumatised and helpless.
However, Arun never gave up hope. A couple of years ago, he turned to his doctors again, asking for possible solutions to his problem. He knew only a miracle could save him, but technology had progressed in leaps and bounds, and millions of patients around the world require solutions to grievous burn injuries such as Arun’s.
A detailed probe and some research led doctors to Integra artificial skin developed by Integra LifeSciences Corporation. At the time, it was the only innovative dermal regeneration template available in India that could aid the growth of Arun’s own layer of skin. This is possible because Integra provides the framework for blood vessels and dermal cells to regrow into a new skin layer.
Dr. Reddy’s and lntegra LifeSciences had entered an exclusive distribution agreement to market and distribute regeneration matrices for patients in India. lntegra is used to treat acute and chronic wounds and is applied to reconstruction surgeries for injuries such as Arun’s. He went under the knife, and soon enough, he was able to resume his life from where he left off. Today, a combination of surgery, Integra skin grafting, physiotherapy, a healthy diet, and never-give-up attitude has helped Arun to heal admirably.
“lntegra has the potential to give patients the wings to fly,” says Sougato Mitra, Cluster Head, Super Specialty. “It not only helps them to overcome trauma, but also gives them a second chance to live their lives to the fullest. This product truly upholds our purpose of Good Health Can’t Wait.”
